Montgomery

Alabama's capital on the Alabama River, and the city where Shannon grew up.

Living in Montgomery

Montgomery has been Alabama's capital since 1846 and is the seat of Montgomery County. The city counted 200,603 residents in the 2020 census. Downtown sits on the southern bank of the Alabama River, Interstate 65 runs north and south through the city, and Interstate 85 begins here and heads east toward Auburn and Atlanta.

History is close at hand. The Alabama State Capitol and Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Jr. was pastor, are National Historic Landmarks, and Rosa Parks's arrest on December 1, 1955, began the Montgomery bus boycott. The Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which opened in 2018, draw visitors from across the country.

Montgomery Whitewater opened in 2023, the Montgomery Biscuits play Double-A baseball in the Southern League, and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival performs in the 240-acre Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park. Maxwell Air Force Base is home to Air University, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama is one of the area's largest employers, and the city's colleges include Alabama State University, Auburn University at Montgomery, Huntingdon College and Faulkner University.

For sellers

With homes averaging 80 days on the market, pricing right at the start and preparing the home well shorten the wait.
